History of SpaghettiOs

Back in 1965, Donald Goerke a marketing manager at Campbell Soup Company who helped introduce SpaghettiOs under the Franco-American brand. Goerke, whose nickname is the Daddy-O of SpaghettiOs, wanted to introduce a pasta dish that could be eaten without the mess. The product was a bit of a risk, being quickly introduced to the national market without any test marketing. But they ran out of the gate full speed ahead with the tagline “the neat round spaghetti you can with a spoon!”, and then that classic jingle “Uh-Oh! SpaghettiOs!”. The SpaghettiOs jingle was based on the Franco-American jingle sung by Jimmie Rodgers. And the Franco-American jingle was inspired by Rodgers own song “Oh-Oh, I’m Falling in Love Again”. We all know the product was a smash hit, and the rest is history.

Outside of SpaghettiOs, Goerke had a very prolific career. During their time with Campbell Soup, they created over 100 products! In addition to his executive career, Goerke became a sort of goodwill ambassador for the Campbell Soup company. He made appearances on shows like “What’s my line?”, and rubbed shoulders with celebrities like President Regan, Martha Stewart, and so many others. Goerke died from heart failure in 2010, but his legacy is carried on by those who SpaghettiOs touched their hearts in childhood.
