Crunchy Gyro

The Crunch, the name says it all!  Instead of the usual pita, we’ve swapped it out for a flour tortilla and cranked it up a notch by coating it in Doritos Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch tortilla chips for that extra crunch! It’s a game changer, and trust me, this is not your average gyro. Now, I like to keep things simple, so I use sour cream instead of Greek yogurt. It adds a creamy richness that complements all the flavors perfectly. For my favorite toppings, I stick to the classics: just feta cheese and fresh tomatoes. But feel free to load yours up with all your favorite gyro toppings and really make it your own!

Ingredients

For the Dorito Shell:

  • 1 bag Doritos Flamin' Hot Cool Ranch flavored tortilla Chips
  • 2 eggs
  • Flour Tortillas

For the Gyro Meat:

  • Dan-O’s Original Seasoning (about 1 tablespoon)
  • Dan-O’s Spicy Seasoning (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1 pound lamb meat
  • ½ sweet yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic (optional)

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • Dan-O’s Crunchy Seasoning (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 lb sour cream
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

Toppings:

  • Feta cheese
  • Red onions, sliced
  • Tomatoes, diced

Preparation Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Make the Dorito Shell: Crush the flavored tortilla chips using a rolling pin on a flat pan.
  3. In a bowl, whisk the 2 eggs to make an egg wash.
  4. Dip each tortilla into the egg wash, then coat it with the crushed Doritos.
  5. Place the coated tortillas face down between the oven racks and bake for 10 minutes.
  6. Prepare the Gyro Meat: In a food processor, combine the lamb meat, sliced onion, and garlic (optional).
  7. Sprinkle generously with both Dan-O’s Original and Spicy Seasoning.
  8. Transfer the meat mixture to a 2-quart casserole dish and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
  9. Make the Tzatziki Sauce: Grate the cucumber using a cheese grater. Use a paper towel to soak up and squeeze out excess juice.
  10. In a bowl, combine the drained cucumber, sour cream, Dan-O’s Crunchy Seasoning, and lemon juice. Mix well.
  11. After baking, let the lamb meat cool slightly, then transfer it to a cutting board and slice it.
  12. Drain the juices from the casserole dish into a skillet and heat on high.
  13. Add the sliced lamb meat to the skillet and cook in the grease, sprinkling generously with Spicy Dan-O’s.
  14. Flip the strips every 2-3 minutes until cooked through.
  15. Take the Dorito crusted tortillas out of the oven and let them cool.
  16. Fill each tortilla with a generous amount of Tzatziki sauce, sliced lamb meat, and your favorite toppings like feta cheese, red onions, and tomatoes.
