What is baked ziti?

Baked ziti is a casserole made with ziti pasta, sometimes rigatoni or penne, and a Neapolitan-style tomato sauce that’s from Italian-American cuisine. It’s a modern twist on the classic pasta al forno. The pasta is first boiled till a little before al dente. The pasta is then added to a tomato-based sauce and combined with a cheese mixture. Sometimes meats, and vegetables are thrown in the mix as well. When all combined, it’s placed in a baking dish, covered with mozzarella cheese before being baked in the oven and served hot.
