Ingredients

  • 1 pound okra
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dan-O's Chipotle Seasoning (plus more for blending)
  • Peanut oil (for frying)

Preparation Instructions

Prepare the Okra:

  • Start by chopping up the okra into small pieces.
  • Place the chopped okra into a large mixing bowl.

Make the Chipotle Buttermilk Sauce:

  • Place the chipotle peppers in adobo sauce into a blender.
  • Add 1 egg to the blender along with 1 cup of buttermilk.
  • Add a generous amount of Dan-O's Chipotle Seasoning to the blender.
  • Blend until you achieve a saucy consistency.
  • Pour the blended mixture over the okra in the bowl and mix well.

Bread the Okra:

  • In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of yellow cornmeal.
  • Add about 1 tbsp of Dan-O's Chipotle Seasoning to the bowl and mix thoroughly.
  • Dredge the sauced okra pieces in the cornmeal-flour mix, ensuring they are well-coated.

Fry the Okra:

  • Heat peanut oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the coated okra pieces in batches for about 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • After frying, remove the okra from the oil and let it sit on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serve:

  • Let the fried okra sit for a few minutes, then serve and enjoy!
