You’re probably familiar with jalapenos, but you may not be as familiar with serrano peppers but you should be, It’s the second most used chili pepper in Mexican cuisine! Serranos are a type of chili pepper that hails from the mountains of Puebla and Hidalgo in Mexico. Their name is a direct reference to the mountains of these regions. The actual plant can grow to be between 1 ft tall all the way to 4 feet! They produce about 50 peppers, and can be harvested at different times depending on the need. Mature peppers come in a variety of shades like red, brown, green, orange and yellow. They’re definitely a plant accustomed to warmer temperatures thriving in temps above 75° F.
The Scoville rating of serranos is about 10,000 to 25,000. They’re known for having a bright and biting flavor that is more distinct than jalapenos. You can often find them used in pico de gallo, and of course, salsa. The Mexican states of Veracruz, Nayarit, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas produce over 180,000 tons of serrano peppers each year.
