Frog-Shaped Chicken

Frog-Shaped Chicken

Have you ever made a frog-shaped chicken? That's right, we're taking a whole farm-raised chicken, cutting it to look like a frog, and roasting it to juicy, golden perfection! My buddy Scott brought me this farm-fresh chicken, so I figured we'd try something a little different. We're seasoning it generously with Dan-O’s SPG Tri-O, our gold-standard salt, pepper, and garlic blend made with two types of salt, three kinds of garlic, and bold black pepper. Then we're adding Dan-O’s Original Seasoning for savory rosemary, garlic, and a little citrus flavor. Tuck some butter under the skin to keep that breast meat juicy, roast it in the oven, and you've got a Dan-Good chicken that's perfect for a family dinner or holiday gathering!

Flavors Used:

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Dan-O’s SPG Tri-O (Salt, Pepper, Garlic)
  • 2 tbsp Dan-O’s Original Seasoning
  • 1 whole chicken (4–5 lbs), fully thawed
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • ¾ stick (6 tbsp) butter, cut into 4 long, thin pieces

Let’s Make It!

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Chicken: Remove any remaining feathers, giblets, and excess skin from the chicken, then pat dry with paper towels. Place the chicken breast-side down on a cutting board. Carefully make shallow cuts through the skin between the thighs and body, freeing the legs so they can spread outward. Gently open the chicken and position the legs outward to create the frog shape. Make small additional cuts around the joints as needed so the chicken lays flat.
  3. Season the Meat Side: Lightly coat the exposed meat side with avocado oil. Generously sprinkle with Dan-O’s SPG Tri-O, making sure to season around the legs, wings, and crevices. Follow with Dan-O’s Original Seasoning.
  4. Season the Skin Side: Flip the chicken skin-side up onto the prepared wire rack, keeping the legs spread outward. Rub with the remaining avocado oil, then evenly coat the skin, wings, and sides of the legs with the remaining Dan-O’s SPG Tri-O and Dan-O’s Original Seasoning.
  5. Add the Butter: Gently loosen the skin over both chicken breasts without tearing it. Slide the butter pieces underneath the skin, distributing them evenly across both breasts to help keep the meat moist while roasting.
  6. Roast the Chicken: Place the chicken in the preheated oven and roast for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, or until the thickest part of the breast and thigh reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the chicken.
  7. Rest and Carve: Remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before carving. Separate the thighs and drumsticks at the joints, then carefully remove the thigh bones while keeping the skin intact. Slice along the center breastbone and follow the rib cage to remove each breast in one piece. Remove the wings, then slice the breast meat into portions, keeping some skin on each slice.
  8. Serve: Serve warm and Yum Yum Get Ya Sum!
